Public Schooled & The Humanity Bureau Start Filming

This week, indie comedy feature Public Schooled with Russell Peters and The Humanity Bureau start filming in Vancouver and British Columbia.

Public Schooled (Feature)
Public Schooled is a indie comedy written by Vancouver-based actors Kyle Rideout and Josh Epstein. Rideout, who just finished up his role as Connor in the new E! TV series The Arrangement, is directing and appearing in the film.

The story follows Liam, a home-schooled and socially awkward young boy who has spent his whole life being and sheltered from reality by his mother. As he begins to break out of his shell, he falls in love with a one-legged girl named Anastasia and eventually enrolls in public-school. He finds himself immersed in the good, the bad and the ugly that goes along with growing up in the real world.

Liam is played by an up and coming young actor named Daniel Doheny. His mother, Claire, is played by Judy Greer (Jurassic World, Ant Man). Claire’s best friend will be played by Grace Park (Hawaii Five-0, Battlestar Galactica). Vancouver-based actress Siobhan Williams, who played one the main characters on Lifetime’s UnREAL season 1, has been cast as Anastasia. According to The Hollywood Reporter, infamous Canadian stand-up comedian Russell Peters was also announced to be among the cast.

Public Schooled will continue filming in Vancouver and British Columbia until December 18th.

The Humanity Bureau (Feature)
The Humanity Bureau is a low-budget feature set in the year 2040. The recession has now been on-going for 30 years and climate change has turned a large part of the midwestern United States into a desert-wasteland. In the midst of these struggles, the government forms “The Humanity Bureau”. The agency is responsible for evaluating the country’s citizens and determining their value to society. Those deemed unworthy are sent to New Eden, a beautiful paradise/oasis… or so they’re told. As rumours start to spread about what’s really happening in New Eden, some citizens decide they’re not going without a fight.

The story was written by Winnipeg-born filmmaker Dave Schultz with Rob W. King directing. There hasn’t been any casting announcements so far, but we’ll update this page once more details are available.

Production of The Humanity Bureau is based out of Osoyoos/Oliver/South Okanagan and filming will continue until December 22nd.

The Flash Crossover Episode with Arrow & Legends Cast (Photos)

The Flash crossover episode for this week’s 4 night event filmed scenes at BC Place in Vancouver in October. Check out 30 behind the scenes photos below.

Spoiler Warning! As with all set photos, there’s always a possibility that a picture or something mentioned in this article could be considered a spoiler.

The scenes pictured below took place near gates C and D of Vancouver’s BC Place stadium and was the last part of multiple days which were filmed at that location. In real life, BC Place is home of the BC Lions football and Vancouver Whitecaps soccer teams, but is frequently used by The Flash as a stand-in for the exterior S.T.A.R. Labs. Scenes which take place inside S.T.A.R. Labs are filmed at their studio.

Caity Lotz (White Canary), Dominic Purcell (Heatwave), Willa Holland (Speedy) and David Ramsey (Spartan) were all on set. They were joined by The Flash and Green Arrow were also seen in costume but it was only their stand-ins who were there at the time unfortunately.

A few scenes were filmed that night including a dialogue between Speedy and White Canary as well as another scene with White Canary, Heatwave, Speedy and Spartan all facing off against “something”. It’s unclear whether the “something” was in fact The Dominators, or if it was some other CGI character that would be added in post production. Another scene included Green Arrow and The Flash getting knocked violently to the ground.

These scenes are part of The Flash crossover episode which was directed by Dermott Downs. Although Dermott hasn’t directed any episodes in the Arrow-verse, he’s no stranger to filming in Vancouver. He directed several episodes of The Tomorrow People which filmed its only season in Vancouver a few years ago.

The Mountain Between Us (Feature)
The Mountain Between Us is based on a novel of the same name written by Charles Martin. The story follows 2 strangers, a man and woman, who decide to take a charter plane after their original flight is delayed due to bad weather. Things go from bad to worse after their charter plane crashes and leaves them stranded on a mountain. Although they survived the crash, the two are forced to work together in order to survive the wildness and temperatures well below freezing.

Production kicked off at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on December 5th where, ironically, several flights were delayed due to winter weather conditions.

Carlos Valdes (Cisco), Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow), Tom Felton (Julian Albert) and Jessica Camacho were spotted while filming The Flash season 3 episode 13 in Vancouver back in December. Check out 21 behind the scenes photos below.

Spoiler Warning! As with all set photos, there’s always a possibility that a picture or something mentioned in this article could be considered a spoiler.

The scenes being filmed on December 2nd took place in downtown Vancouver’s Oceanic Plaza, Portal Park and in the 1000 block of West Hastings Street. All 3 locations are in close proximity and are frequently featured on The Flash (as well as Supergirl, Arrow and more).

After seeing Cisco’s gradual discovery of his Vibe capabilities over the past year, it was great to see him don the full suit; which features many characteristics straight from the comics. In between takes, Carlos was nice enough to talk with fans and sign autographs.

Earlier in the night, Danielle Panabaker (Caitlin Snow) and Tom Felton (Julian Albert / Albert Desmond?) filmed a scene together in Portal Park. The two shared a dialogue under the park’s pavilion before locking arms and walking out of the scene. Looks a bit like a #Snowbert scene to me.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg announced that The Flash season 3 episode 13 is the first of a two-part storyline centred around Gorilla Grodd. He went on to mention that one of the episodes is set in Gorilla City on Earth 2. This may explain the Indiana Jones-esque attire being worn by Caitlin and Julian in the scene pictured above. It’s worth noting that Julian wore the same hat in episode 9 during a flashback to him finding the Philosopher’s Stone in the Indus Valley.

After the success of Unleashing Mr. Darcy during last year’s Winterfest event, it’s no surprise that Hallmark is back with not one, but two filmed-in-BC dog centric movies this year: Walking the Dog and Love at First Bark.

RELATED: Unleashing Mr. Darcy From Hallmark’s Winterfest 2016

Walking the Dog
During late 2016, Hallmark’s Walking the Dog took over the picturesque coastal region of Saanich on Vancouver Island. Jennifer Finnigan (Tyrant, Better With You) and Sam Page (Switched at Birth, All Things Valentine) star as Kristie Simmons and Keith Ames respectively. The two are competing attorneys in a case where Kristie is fighting to improve the public transit in her small hometown by adding a bike lane.

Fate brings the unlikely pair together outside of the courtroom as well after their dogs meet and fall in love. Out of respect for the cute puppy-love relationship, Kristie and Keith have to find a way to put their differences aside. They both start to realize that they not only met their match in the courtroom, but in their love lives as well.

According to timescolonist.com, some of the filming locations used for the movie included Sidney’s Municipal Hall, Nourish Kitchen & Café in James Bay and a private residence in the Saanich Peninsula.

Here’s a photo shared by Jennifer from the set of Walking the Dog on Vancouver Island:

Love at First Bark
Former One Tree Hill star Jana Kramer is currently in the Vancouver area filming Love at First Bark. Jana plays Julia Evans; a single woman with a new German Sheppard named Brad who turns out to be just as out of control as her personal life.

After Brad destroys nearly everything in Julia’s apartment, she’s left with no choice but to seek professional help. A dog trainer named Owner steps in to teach Brad some discipline, but quickly sees that Julia needs to make some changes of her own. As things with Brad start to settle down, Julia discovers she might have feelings for Owen.

Jana shared a cute behind the scenes pic of her snuggling up to her canine co-star Brad as production ramped up last week.

Lost In Space TV Series From Netflix Starts Filming in Vancouver

This week, the Netflix adaptation of the popular 1960s TV series Lost In Space starts filming in Vancouver and British Columbia.

Lost In Space – Season 1 (TV Series)
After being in the works for several years, the new 10-episode Netflix adaptation of the classic Lost In Space TV series officially starts production in the Vancouver area this week. The original series, created by Irwin Allen, aired from 1965 to 1968. The new take will reportedly stay pretty true to its roots.

The story follows John and Maureen Robinson who, along with their children and Don West, set out on a trip to another planet but find themselves off-course. They eventually become stranded light years away from where they were supposed to be. As if being “lost in space” wasn’t enough, the group has to work together to overcome alien threats as well.

Good thing Vancouver knows a thing or two about putting aliens on TV.

Lost In Space will be helmed by Zack Estrin who is best known for his work on the original Prison Break series, as a co-producer/supervising producer. Although he wasn’t involved with the Prison Break reboot series that filmed in Vancouver last year, Zack is no stranger to the film scene in the area. He served as the executive producer on Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and The Whispers, which both filmed their only seasons in the Vancouver area.

Here’s a roundup of the main cast that has been announced so far:

Actor Role You may know them from
Toby Stephens John Robinson Die Another Day, Black Sails

UnREAL Season 3 Starts Filming, Bates Motel Wraps Up Series Finale

This week, UnREAL season 3 starts filming in Vancouver and British Columbia while sadly, Bates Motel wraps up filming of its series finale.

UnREAL – Season 3 (TV Series)
Lifetime’s hit reality TV parody series UnREAL season 3 starts filming in Vancouver and area today. If you haven’t seen the show yet, it’s a comical, yet sometimes dark, look at what really goes on behind the scenes of a reality TV show. The show-within-a-show format centres around a fictitious reality dating series called “Everlasting” which closely resembles The Bachelor. Series leads Shiri Appleby (Swimfan, Life Unexpected) and Constance Zimmer (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., House of Cards) play Rachel and Quinn, the two master manipulators that stir up the drama that makes for good television.

Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro created UnREAL, which was heavily inspired by Sarah’s award-winning indie short film called Sequin Raze. You can check out the Sequin Raze short film at the bottom of this post.

UnREAL season 3 will feature the show’s first female suitor, Serena, who will be played by Caitlin Fitzgerald (Masters of Sex, Rectify). In true Bachelorette form, several men will compete to earn Caitlin’s hand in marriage by the end of the show, and the audience will get to see what happens off camera to get to those emotional and dramatic moments.

Yesterday, Entertainment Weekly announced the cast who will play some the contestants. The list includes includes notable names such as Marcus Rosner (When Calls the Heart, Autumn in the Vineyard), Cameron Bancroft (Cedar Cove, The Wedding March) and Terry Chen (Continuum, Van Helsing). All 3 actors have appeared in tons of Vancouver-filmed productions in addition to what’s mentioned.

Craig Bierko (Cinderalla Man), Josh Kelly (One Life to Live, Transformers: Dark of the Moon), Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman (Stargate Universe) and Genevieve Buechner (The 100) will be returning to reprise their roles as Chet, Jeremy, Jay and Madison respectively. They will be joined by Kassandra Clementi (Home and Away, Single Ladies) as Crystal, Jaime Callica (The Romeo Section, Power Rangers) as Xavier and Chelsea Hobbs (Make It or Break It) as Charlie. Clementi and Callica both play new love interests for Chet and Jay respectively while Hobbs joins the crew of ‘Everlasting’ as a new camera assistant.

Sequin Raze: The Short Film That Inspired UnREAL

Check out Sequin Raze, Sarah Gertrude Shapiro’s award-winning short film that inspired the UnREAL TV series. It’s amazing to see the similarities or parallels between the short film and the series.

UnREAL season 3 is scheduled to continue filming in Vancouver and British Columbia until May 11th.

Crowned & Moldering: A Fixer Upper Mystery starring Jewel, A Fool and His Honey: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery with Candace Cameron Bure and Lifetime’s Tiny House of Terror start filming in British Columbia this week.

Crowned & Moldering: A Fixer Upper Mystery (TV Movie)
Crowned & Moldering is the 2nd installment in the latest original movie series from Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, Fixer Upper Mysteries, starring Jewel. The first movie, Framed For Murder, filmed in British Columbia throughout last October and premiered on January 15th.

Based on Kate Carlisle’s New York Times bestselling novel series, the Fixer Upper Mysteries revolve around Shannon Hughes (played by Jewel). Shannon is a professional when it comes to restoring old Victorian-style homes, but she also uses clues that she uncovers along the way to discover the truth behind unsolved mysteries.

The series is set in the picturesque town of ‘Lighthouse Cove’, a fictitious town perfectly portrayed by Vancouver Island; the Victoria area in particular. According to an interview production manager Allen Lewis did with timescolonist.com, Crowned & Moldering will feature a scene involving Shannon inside a dumbwaiter (freight elevator) dropping between floors in search of the movie’s antagonist.

Crowned & Moldering will be filming in Victoria and area until February 25th and is currently slated to premiere in April of 2017. In case you missed the first Fixer Upper Mystery movie, if you’re in the US you can catch it Friday, February 10th at 9pm on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries.

A Fool and His Honey (Aurora Teagarden 6) (TV Movie)
After just wrapping up the 5th Aurora Teagarden movie, Dead Over Heels, a couple of weeks ago, production on movie number 6 began today. Titled A Fool and His Honey, the movie continues Hallmark’s movie adaptation of the popular novel series about Aurora Teagarden written by Charlaine Harris.

In the novel version of A Fool and His Honey, an unexpected guest shows up at Aurora’s house with more than just baggage; she’s also carrying a dangerous secret. Naturally, Aurora is determined to figure out just what the girl is hiding, but in doing so she might find herself in deeper than she expected.

A Fool and His Honey will be filming in British Columbia, primarily Abbotsford again, until February 24th. It may be a few months before we see this one air on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, but don’t miss Dead Over Heels which airs Sunday, March 19th at 9pm.

The Death Cure Could Be Returning to British Columbia to Film

$

It looks like there’s a good chance that The Death Cure, from the popular Maze Runner movie series, will be returning to British Columbia to finish filming where it started a year ago.

The Death Cure, the latest movie in the Maze Runner series, first began production in Cache Creek, BC last March. A few days after cameras started rolling, the series creator James Dashner took to Twitter to announce that production had been shut down due to an injury to one of the main cast members, Dylan O’Brien. It was eventually revealed by WorkSafeBC that the injury was the result of a safety lanyard being too short causing the actor to be suspended above 2 moving vehicles during a sequence.

After further delays, Deadline.com revealed that production would resume during early 2017, but mentioned that it would be filmed in a new location. Now, thanks to information from @lemon_buzz via Production Weekly, it looks like Maze Runner: The Death Cure could be returning to British Columbia after all. The start date is currently set for March 14th (ironically the same date production began last year). As always, dates (and locations) are subject to change.

Update: It should be noted that director Wes Ball and crew have been in South Africa preparing to film there; so this could be either in addition to, or instead of BC. We’ll update this article as new information comes available.

The movies are an adaptation of the best-selling novel series written by James Dashner. They take place in a futuristic world and are centred around Thomas (played by Dylan O’Brien) and his friends, the Gladers. In Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Thomas and the Gladers battle the organization one last time in search of a cure that could save all of humanity. Although it’s rumoured that this is the final film in the series, James Dashner has written 2 more novels which serve as prequels.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure was originally expected to be released this February, but it now looks like it will premiere during early 2018.

This week, Shane Black’s Predator reboot and Hallmark’s Like Cats and Dogs and start filming in Vancouver and British Columbia.

The Predator (aka Ollie) (Feature)
After originally being scheduled to start filming in Vancouver in October of last year, production on Shane Black’s Predator reboot finally starts today. Shane is best known as the creator of the Lethal Weapon movie series as well as directing/writing the screenplay for Iron Man 3. He’s no stranger to the Predator franchise though, having played the role of Hawkins in the 1987 movie while providing support and guidance to the rookie director John McTiernan.

In an interview with Collider.com, Shane describes the Predator reboot script he and Fred Dekker wrote as being part of the original mythos. According to The Hollywood Reporter, unlike what Predator fans may be used to, this movie will be set in suburbia and will include several fierce alien hunter killers. Full plot details have not been revealed yet.

The Predator reboot had originally planned to have Benicio Del Toro as the lead, but he was later replaced by Narcos star Boyd Holbrook. Here’s a roundup of the cast that have been announced so far via The Hollywood Reporter:

Actor Role You may know them from
Boyd Holbrook Ex-Marine Narcos, Gone Girl, Milk
Olivia Munn Scientist Office Christmas Party, The Newsroom, X-Men: Apocalypse, Miles From Tomorrowland
Keegan-Michael Key Ex-Marine MADtv, Let’s Be Cops, Tomorrowland
Trevante Rhodes Ex-Marine/friend of Boyd Holbrook’s character If Loving You Is Wrong
Jacob Tremblay Son of Boyd Holbrook’s character Room, Shut In
Sterling K. Brown Government Agent The People v. O.J. Simpson, This Is Us
Thomas Jane The Expanse, The Mist
Alfie Allen Ex-Marine Game of Thrones

Shane Black shared a pic of some of the cast on his Twitter account:

Vancouver’s own Jacob Tremblay has been busy ever since his breakout performance in the 2015 film Room with Brie Larson which was filmed in the Toronto area. He was back home in Vancouver for a leading role in Wonder with Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson which just wrapped up filming in Vancouver and area last September.

The Predator reboot is scheduled to continue filming in Vancouver and British Columbia until May 15th.

Like Cats and Dogs (TV Movie)
Cat owners and dog owners are often very different types of people. This couldn’t be more true with Spencer and Lola. Spencer is in town to meet an online date and Lola is in the same town to escape reality for a little while. Thanks to a booking mishap, the 2 strangers find themselves forced the share the same vacation rental house. If that weren’t enough, Spencer’s cat and Lola’s dog are joining them too. Although their guards are up and the situation is not ideal, all 4 find a way to make it work, and a romance eventually transpires.

Like Cats and Dogs was announced alongside 2 other dog-themed movies, Walking the Dog and Love at First Bark, during this year’s TCA press tour. Walking the Dog filmed on Vancouver Island during late 2016 while Love at First Bark just wrapped up at the beginning of February. The announcement was no surprise after the huge success of Unleashing Mr. Darcy which premiered during Hallmark’s 2016 Winterfest campaign; the film drew 3 million total viewers during its premiere alone.

RELATED: Walking the Dog & Love at First Bark Hallmark Movies Filmed in BC

Cassidy Gifford (The Gallows) as well as British Columbia based actors Drew Tanner (Date With Love), Jacky Lai (Beyond) and Nelson Wong (American Mary) are among the cast for the movie. Like Cats and Dogs will be filming in Vancouver and British Columbia until March 10th and is expected to premiere later this spring on Hallmark Channel in the US. The movie is set in a small beach town, so perhaps we’ll see some of British Columbia’s beautiful coastline featured in the movie.
